Tamar Hirschfeld was born in 1984 in Jerusalem. She graduated from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem where she trained as a painter before working with other materials such as video and installation. She also studied at the Villa Arson (Nice) and Le Fresnoy (Tourcoing). Her work has been presented at the Marseille International Film Festival (FID Marseille).
Since 2020, Tamar Hirschfeld has been doing a research residency at the Centre international de recherche sur le verre et les arts plastiques (Cirva) in Marseille. The artist, who is used to creating with simple materials (paper, plaster or clay), is confronted with the preciousness and complexity of glass, the mastery of which requires the expert hands of the craftsmen with whom she has established a dialogue woven of complicity. The first objects she designs are anchored in the direct environment of the studio and in everyday life in France and Provence, which Tamar Hirschfeld inevitably associates with cooking: croissants, brioches, egg-plants, a kebab, a tomato… It is with a sense of humor and discrepancy characteristic of the artist’s work that the most banal reality appears to us in a strangely disturbing light.
