ProjectionIn the course of his research, Alain Gomis recovered the rushes of a French television program from 1969 that had been preserved. Thelonious Monk arrives in Paris and before his evening concert, he agrees to be filmed. In these images, edited by Alain Gomis, we see the pianist confronting the media machine, which is ready to do anything to create stereotypes in defiance of the artist’s fragility. We see Monk resisting as much as he can through his silences but also through his music.
The film will be followed by a meeting with the director (by videoconference)
Born in 1972 in Paris, Alain Gomis studied art history and cinema. After making videos and short films, his first feature film L’Afrance (2002) won the Silver Leopard at Locarno. His latest film Felicity was presented in the Competition section of the 2017 Berlinale.
